Get to know Michael below:<\/p>\n Michael \u2013 nickname is Macca and I\u2019m based in Auckland.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I moved to New Zealand in 2012 from Edinburgh, Scotland.\u00a0 My wife and I moved over with four boys all under six years old. I still don\u2019t quite know how we managed a 36-hour flight with four small children!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I live in Auckland with my wife Jo, the four boys plus five cats and Abby the dog. The house is nuts and I love coming to work with Abby! P.S. – I\u2019m not a cat lover.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019m a Director of the business<\/span>, <\/span>I run the Auckland office and recruit in the geotechnical engineering<\/a> sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I love working with people and enjoy <\/span>meeting engineers and <\/span>consultancies<\/span> in person.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bit old-fashioned to do this<\/span> as so many arrange meetings via <\/span>Teams<\/span> but I find making that bit more effort is invaluable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I have recruited in civil, <\/span>structural<\/span> and power engineering <\/span>sectors<\/span> but have spent the last four years <\/span>focus<\/span>i<\/span>ng <\/span>on<\/span> geotechnical <\/span>engineering<\/span>. I find it really interesting as before you can build, you need to know <\/span>what\u2019s<\/span> beneath the ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I tend to spend four days working in the office and one day working from home. Most of the team do something similar but we all try to be in the office for three days per week. I think being in the office is important for those days as it allows the business the chance to grow and learn from one another.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I don\u2019t recruit as much as I once <\/span>did<\/span> but I like to meet five or six people in person each month. They may not want to move right away but at least they know who will help when the time arrives, and –\u00a0 I also like coffee. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In Edinburgh, a candidate was late for an <\/span>interview and<\/span> he cited a gas leak from his electric fire as the reason.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I had a meeting at Faslane, a Royal Navy Nuclear submarine base in Glasgow, Scotland<\/span>. <\/span>The consultancy needed a nuclear safety engineer to be based on site. <\/span>I<\/span> had to send my passport away six weeks before the meeting<\/span> to gain clearance. A fascinating but terrifying place! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Smile and relax. Talk about things you know and if you don\u2019t <\/span>know something, <\/span>be honest and transparent. Those areas of <\/span>perceived <\/span>weaknes<\/span>s<\/span> are the areas for development and will interest the client.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The perfect candidate isn\u2019t out there. <\/span>They are often the person that <\/span>has just left your business. Pick the candidate who is driven and determined over the one with the strongest<\/span>\u00a0academic record<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Trying to avoid cats<\/span> with plenty of dog walks to the Beer Spot in <\/span>Panmure<\/span>. I also enjoy watching my boys play football \u2013 they are way better than me<\/span> and play throughout the year.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I like cycling (I have five bikes) and it can become an obsession<\/span>. <\/span>I <\/span>also <\/span>love fishing whether that<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> flyfishing or trying to catch Kingfish in the <\/span>H<\/span>auraki Gulf.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I always liked the idea of cooking and being a chef.\u00a0 After six months of working split shifts in a busy kitchen, I knew my days of being Gordon Ramsey were numbered!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Engineering Specialist Michael is one of Archway’s founding Directors and specialises in the geotechnical engineering sector across New Zealand.
